i have a new system which is the ultimate and although my brother
printer will work, the system will lock up on start up. i have to
unplug the usb on start up or the system will lock up on the dell logo
screen.

configure the BIOS for the USB ports. See if another setting allows the
boot. Most likely the new system is USB 2. If the printer is more than 5
years old it most likely only supports USB 1 which might be the conflict.

Also make sure you have all the USB patches for Vista. If you are running
SP2 you should be good.

i have an mfc 640 brother printer & i am able to get the control pane
up & email/scan, when finished it will not open the windows mail, t
which file do i connect it with, because i tryed many & will not wor

As I remember, that MFP is an older device, and might have worked with
outlook express and/or outlook. Thunderbird is also a possibility.
I gave mine away over a year ago, due to various problems--
Slow, uses too much ink at a high price, feeder misfeeds, and so forth.
